According to California authorities 15 people are injured in the accident among them three were in critical condition.
The pipeline explosion occurred around 2:30 p.m.
The accident was caused by a construction crew, who accidentally broke a natural gas transmission line,
The pipeline belonged to Pacific Gas & Electric Corp, the fire broke out and it has injured jail inmates and the construction members.
The accident has temporarily halted the traffic at highway and the railroad line was also closed. The railway line was closed in order to check if the accident has done any damage to a railway bridge over the river.
The California Highway Patrol has urged the drivers to use other routes as they were not sure when the highway would be open, but the highway reopened after three hours.
Pete Martinez of the Fresno Fire Department said that a large fireball rose to about 200 feet in the air, and it has also triggered a two-alarm gas fire.
The worker who struck the gas pipe line was immediately rushed to the hospital by helicopter and he is critically injured.
Mary Lisa Russell, a spokeswoman for Community Regional Medical Center, said that four of them were bought to their hospital and three of them are in critical condition and the other is safe and out of danger and 2 other were taken to burn unit.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Department said that the explosion took place at a shooting range employed by law enforcement.
California Public Utilities Commission spokeswoman Terrie Prosper said, “The CPUC will conduct a full investigation of the explosion and has already coordinated with the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.”
Representatives of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration said that they will also examine the utility unit.
