In the first manned Gemini mission and the second manned US space mission. NASA pilot John Yong smuggled the sandwich into the space.
Young smuggled the corned beef sandwich to the space 50 years ago, on March 1965. It was the Gemini 3 probe.
Commander pilot Gus Grissom was along with Young on the mission.
When Grisson saw the sandwich in Young’s hand he asked him from where he got it. Then young told him he bought the sandwich along with him and he also wants to taste it.
Wally Schirra was a backup crew member, he had brought the sandwich two days before the launch and he gave to young on the day of launch of Gemini 3.
The sandwich was difficult to eat as the crumbs started floating in the cabin, when young took a bite.
Garrison said, “After the flight, our superiors at NASA let us know in no uncertain terms that non-man-rated corned beef sandwiches were out for future space missions.”
