Consumption of too much ice tea could risk kidney failure, in a recent finding it has revealed that an Arkansas man drinking 16 glasses of ice tea per day suffered from kidney failure.
The 56 year old man is hospitalized last year as he was suffering from weakness, nausea, aches, fatigue.
Doctors found huge amount of Ca salts in his urine they were surprised to find that there is no history of kidney stone in his life and further questioning him revealed that huge intake of ice tea could possibly be the reason.
The kidney of the patient is clogged and inflamed with oxalate a chemical which is found in food.
General intake of oxalate of an average American is 150 mg per day but the person took 1500 mg of oxalate with 16 glasses of ice tea which is 10 times more than the average person’s intake.
Tea is having benefits only when taken in little amounts, excessive intake of tea can increase oxalate levels which will lead to kidney failure.
According to a study black tea when consumed in moderation could reduce the risk of kidney stones, so moderation is the key and consuming less will benefit.
The study is published in New England Journal of Medicine.
