Wider monitoring program among farmers who use antibiotics on their farm animals is needed said the Obama administration.

The national Plan released by the administration is 63 pages long.

The main aim of the plan is to use better medicines or drugs rather than reducing the usage of drugs.

It said that the five year strategy will lead to major reductions in the incidents of urgent and serious disease threats.

President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology has released a report based on the recommendations of the report the plan has been built.

The plan says, “All of us who depend on antibiotics must join in a common effort to detect, stop, and prevent the emergence and spread of resistant bacteria.”

The plan includes a three year goal to collect data on the resistance of the food producing animals, on the usage of antibiotics and also to measure industry stewardship programs.

The research will be funded by U.S. Food and Drug Administration or USDA.

The new plan is to discover antibiotics which will build stronger immune system and enhance the resistance of the animals to diseases.

The advocates say that the steps taken by USDA are light and it should ban on-therapeutic uses of medically important drugs instead of relying on the cooperation of companies.

Steve Roach, senior analyst with the advocacy group Keep Antibiotics Working said the administration strategy “ignores clear evidence that the use of medically important antibiotics for routine disease prevention creates a public health risk that is identical to those posed by routine use for growth promotion, drug makers regularly exploit this loophole by advertising the growth benefits that can result from using antibiotics for disease prevention and FDA has failed to crack down on this practice.”
