Oklahoma State Department of Health has confirmed the first measles case since 1997.
The confirmed case is found in Stillwater, Payne County.
The patient is identifies as the international traveler who came to Oklahoma.
OSDH said if anyone thinks that they at a risk of exposure then they should contact the local health department.
They say that the person is protected is they are immunized with two doses of measles vaccine after their first birthday.
They say that the incubation period of the disease is around 7 to 18 days after the person has contracted the disease.
The symptoms of measles: “Measles begins with a mild to moderate fever, runny nose, red eyes, and cough. A few days later, a rash appears starting on the face spreading to the rest of the body accompanied by a fever that can reach up to 105 degrees. Measles can lead to pneumonia and other complications, especially in young children and adults over 20. The disease can also cause serious problems in pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.” The state health department said.
MMR vaccine is the vaccine taken for measles. If the person is having doubt whether they have immunized or not then they can find it out.
Schlaefi said, “It’s a blood test. It’s called a tittering test. They can test for MMR antibodies within your system to see if you are fully vaccinated or not.”
Measles is a very contagious disease and they can spread the virus four days before the onset of rashes and until the four days after the rashes started.
