According to astronomers, Saturn’s biggest ring Phoebe has just smashed its records.

Astronomers discovered that the ring is more than twice the thickness of what it was originally assumed to be. But despite the thickness, it cannot be seen with naked eye.

The oversized ring which is known as Phoebe Ring is actually composed of tiny particles, and therefore these are not visible to naked eye.

This discovery could bring fresh light on the evolution of the fabled Saturinian ring system.

The Saturn’s ring is actually 200 times bigger that what was previously assumed. It is darker, composed of tiny particles and more mysterious. In 1671, when Italian astronomer Givanni Domenico Cassini saw through telescope the moon now known as Iapetus, this was the first hint that indicated that Saturn has a secret ring.

The moon discovered was very strange, it has one side white and on the other side completely black. Scientists thought that Iapetus was plowing through a ring of dark material not seen from Earth. “It’s the same effect when you drive the car down the highway in a rainstorm and the rain hits the windshield,” said Hamilton a scientist involved in the study.

It is immense in size and bigger than any ring in the solar system or any other planetary system. In fact, if you happened to be inside the ring, then you wouldn’t see or experience anything since the material was sparse and one could visibly see nothing.

There is an empty space and from away, you get the sense that it is a ring. It’s the size of a mountain and consists of maybe just 20 articles. There are other unique characteristics like it is weird, big, and dark, tilted and orbit backwards.

Astronomers have managed to capture this through an infrared telescope to get a better look.

The findings are published in the journal Nature.
