Based on a recent press release, Pinterest has just enhanced its image recognition system to give users the possibility to easily identify the content they are interested in. The new system does not just identify pins, based on the search queries that users have made, but it also allows people to find out what a specific object in a photo is and where they can find it.
Pinterest, like Facebook, Google and Snapchat is going great distances to offer improved services to its users. The platform is already popular enough boasting millions of pins and photos, so the only thing that was missing was a good image recognition system.
This technology may not be advanced as Google’s computer vision, but is, nevertheless, different from what other companies are using. Pinterest has explained that people will receive suggestions, based on the queries they are making. These suggested pins will be displayed next to the content that the user is selecting.
What’s more interesting, users have the possibility to click on certain items in a photo and find out what they are and where they can be purchased. Pinterest has explained this feature by providing the example of an IKEA picture where users can simply click on a table (should they be interested in it) and be automatically directed towards the furniture producer’s website.
As you can imagine, the new feature is not only attractive to users, but also to marketing companies. This option will most probably be used by many enterprises because it is a good way of promoting their products. Thus, it is a win-win situation because everybody gets to win, users, companies and Pinterest, alike.
Pinterest has foreseen the errors that the program is expected to make upon its implementation. As a result, they apologized to users for all the inconveniences and reassured them that the new system becomes better while it is being used.
Pinterest has been preparing the new system for months. They have worked closely with Berkeley Vision and Learning Center until the new image recognition technology was delivered. The company plans to add other marketing features in the future, but this will happen in time.
