Republican Governor Sam Brownback on Tuesday signed a bill into a law to check the rising incidences of abortions in women having second trimester of pregnancy.

With the new law, Kansas has become the first American state to impose ban on abortion procedures for those women who are on their second trimester of pregnancy.

Brownback, a strong detractor of abortion, has signed the bill into a law an act in order to halt what lawmakers call are “dismemberment abortions”. The new law will come in effect from July 1.

Second trimester abortion is mostly dubbed as dismembering a fetus by the critics.

The new law aims to prohibit the use of dilation and evacuation. The bill said the procedure can cause the fetus to be extracted in pieces.

About eight to nine percent of abortions use this procedure across the nation. Brownback along with committee of National Right to Life has been hoping that the new legislation will also prompt other states to implement the similar law for abortions.

Several other American states such as Missouri, Oklahoma and South Carolina are considering similar bans on abortion.

Under the new law, the procedure will be allowed to preserve the life of a pregnant woman or when the health of the mother is in serious jeopardy due to the pregnancy.

The supporters in Kansas have termed the procedure horrendous. On the other hand, the women’s healthcare groups have termed the new legislation as the safest way for pregnancy termination in the second trimester.

According to the experts, approximately 90 percent of abortions in the US take place in the first trimester.
