Benefits of Weight loss surgery

March 30, 2015 By Stephen Kenwright

weight loss surgeryWeight loss is a very big issue, it not easy to lose weights as it is easy to gain it.

Doctors suggest weight loss surgery or bariatric surgery, when it becomes impossible to lose weight.

A study has released some of the benefits of weight loss surgery.

Generally weight loss surgery is carried before the hip or knee replacement surgery as it beneficial.

It has also found that weight loss surgery reduces the risk of asthma flare-up.

Patients who needed knee or hip surgery were enrolled in the experiment.

They were divided into two groups, one group had patients who have undergone weight loss surgery before the knee or hip surgery and the other group is the one who didn’t had weight loss surgery before the hip or knee replacement surgery.

It was found that the people who had weight loss surgery not only recovered early but asthma flare-up were also reduced.

The study is led by Dr. Emily Dodwell from Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York.

Dodwell said 50 percent of hip or knee replacement surgery is performed in obese patients.

Weight loss surgery reduces asthma attacks

March 29, 2015 By Jeff Suchon

asthmaWeight loss through surgery is effective in preventing and reducing asthma attacks.

According to a study, after undergoing weight loss surgery or the bariatric surgery asthma attacks were reduced in patients, and the risk of asthmas attack remained low even after two years

The study was published in the journal Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Researches has analyzed the data from California, Nebraska and Florida which include  2,300 obese patients who had asthma between the age 18 and 54 who had weight loss surgery between 2007 and 2009.

The study’s lead author Dr. Kohei Hasegawa, an attending physician in the emergency department of the Massachusetts General Hospital located in Boston, said the study relied on the weight loss surgery as an “instrument of substantial weight loss,” but the study didn’t had any information of the weights of the persons before or after the surgery.

The study revealed that 22 percent of the patients had at least one emergency visit to the hospital because of asthma attack, which is one or two years before the surgery and this percent significantly decreased to 11 percent during the two years after the weight loss surgery.

The researchers noted that weight loss is linked to reduction in the asthma attacks.

But it is not clear as what is the right amount of weight to lose to get the best result.

Weight loss surgery before the knee or hip replacement is cost effective

March 28, 2015 By Jeff Suchon

surgeryOverweight is a very serious problem, if people have been overweight for long period of time then they reach to a point where they have to replace their hip or the knee.

But if the person is heavier then this solution will not work for the person.

Dr Emily Dodwell, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at HSS says, “Up to 50 percent of hip replacements are performed in obese patients at some institutions. Obesity is associated with longer hospital stays, higher overall costs and higher failure rates, necessitating costly revision surgery.”

Most cases the patients are asked to lose their weight before the knee or hip replacement and in some cases it is very impossible to lose weight, then doctors suggests going for bariatric surgery which helps to reduce weight very quickly and a speedy recovery.

“For the study, we chose a decision analysis design because we could use a mathematical model to simulate the outcomes and costs of each treatment path based on results and costs that have already been published in the literature,” says Dodwell.

She further adds, “Our findings indicate that surgical weight loss prior to joint replacement is likely a cost-effective option from a public payer standpoint in order to improve outcomes in obese patients who are candidates for joint replacement, some health care systems do not include weight loss surgery as a covered benefit, and it is possible that studies such as this will be helpful in re-evaluating whether weight loss surgery may be a reasonable covered benefit.”
