Regular consumption of yogurt does not benefit health

April 24, 2015 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

yogurtYogurt is generally considered as nutritious and recommended by diet experts to include it in diet. It has got calcium, probiotics and protein. It is also believed to be a natural antidote to a number of health problems.

According to a recent study conducted in Spain, it is found that there is no link between regular yogurt consumption and improved health outcomes.

The study found that those who have regularly consumed yogurt were not any more or less likely to experience disease, disorder or disability.

The study is conducted on 4,445 Spanish adults over 3 ½ years.

The study is led by the researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid. Researchers have looked at the results from a short survey about dietary habits and factors related to a person’s health related quality of life or HRQL.

Researchers have analyzed the results and found no correlation between intake of yogurt and improved physical health.

Esther Lopez-Garcia, lead author of the study said, “The regular consumption of yogurt was not linked to health-related quality of life, for future research more specific instruments must be used which may increase the probability of finding a potential benefit of this food.”

Researchers found that there is no link between yogurt and improved health for those who don’t smoke and eat a Mediterranean diet, they have mentioned this particularly so that the chance that poor health choices might overcover the benefits of yogurt among people can be eliminated.

Lopez-Garcia said, “In comparison with people that did not eat yogurt, those who ate this dairy product regularly did not display any significant improvement in their score on the physical component of quality of life, and although there was a slight improvement mentally, this was not statistically significant.”

Yogurt consumption is recommended by a number of nutritionists, there are many reasons for it, one being that it is the ideal source of calcium which is good for bones, and the most prominent among all reasons is that it contains essential micro-organisms or probiotics which is very beneficial.

There are a number of studies which confirmed the importance of bacteria in human gut for positive health, including mental and physical health.

But it is still foggy why these micro-organisms are beneficial and whether the foods like yogurt can deliver those good micro-organisms.

The findings of the study are published in the journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The health experts often recommend a dairy product as part of a healthy diet. But a new study has found that the regular intake of yogurt hardly has any effect on improvement of physical or mental health.

Even though the efficacy of yogurt has never been proved, its regular consumption has been suggested for years by the dietician and health experts.

The study was conducted by the researchers at the Autonomous University of Madrid.

For the current study, the researchers involved over 4,000 people and analysed the association between the regular yogurt intake and health-related quality of life.

The researchers carried an analytical study on the link between the intake of yogurt and the change in the test score among the participants comprising 4,445 Spanish adults for over a period of three-and-a-half-year.

There was no relation between the improvement of the physical and the mental parameters that were analysed by the researchers.

Study lead author Esther Lopez-Garcia said, “The regular consumption of yogurt was not linked to health-related quality of life.”

The main dietary guidelines in countries like Spain back the intake of dairy products as part of a healthy diet.

The findings of the study were published in the journal of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
