Testosterone warnings will be raised once again as the FDA tries to fight the ever increasing industry of anti-aging and testosterone replacement and enhancement products.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Tuesday that it will be introducing new warnings and taking a few further steps, such as a labeling revision, so as to combat the effects of testosterone and its replacements’ over-use.
As the testosterone products have developed into a billion dollars market and the U.S. will have to face an opioid addiction trend, the new warnings against over-use should lead to a better understanding of the potential risks posed by any substance abuse.
Testosterone and its derivate, such as anabolic steroids, has been approved and is one of the treatments of health problems such as clinically low levels of the hormone or delayed puberty, and can also be used in fighting the effects of diseases such as AIDS or cancer, health issues which cause muscle loss.
However, the FDA does not favor or recommend the use of testosterone or steroids as anti-aging products or in the case of bodybuilders and athletes.
Although they are not amongst the approved of enhancers, the respective drugs and alternative products are used in order to boost athletic performances, and also so as to improve one’s physical appearance.
This latter use is mostly employed by the men beauty industry as it tries to combat the effects of aging with pills, gels, or even injections. The millions of buyers have already lead to a $2 billion industry value of such products.
As most only see the benefits, they seem to forget the problems the hormone may cause in one’s body if it is used and registers a too high value.
The FDA has already warned and will try to further increase awareness as it went to list a set of possible if not probable issues with the testosterone over-abuse.
Amongst the reported outcomes and adverse reactions, one can count heart problems, mood swings and personality changes, male infertility, and high body toxicity levels.
The heart problems include strokes, heart attacks and failures, which can lead to death and are amongst the more serious outcomes.
Although the use of steroid and testosterone can lead to an increase in the physique, an over-abuse can also account for physical transformations which could lead to depression, aggression, and an increased hostility.
As besides testosterone, steroids are chemically produced synthetic drugs, they can cause high levels of toxicity in the body which may lead to baldness, liver toxicity, and kidney failure amongst others.
A too brusque cut of the testosterone products could also cause withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, fatigue, irritability, loss of appetite or libido, and depression.
