Vinegar is a very versatile product. In addition to using it in the kitchen or as a domestic cleaning element, it also helps us with indoor plants.
Although vinegar is primarily used in the kitchen to season salads or intensify the flavor of a stew or meal, it is also widely used in household chores and can be used to clean and disinfect surfaces and electrical appliances, as well as to remove grease in the kitchen, lime in the shower and stubborn stains on clothes.
But that's not all: vinegar is also highly recommended in the world of gardening, especially for houseplants, as it serves as a powerful and effective herbicide to fight pests, although this is not its only use. Here we explain what vinegar (apple, wine and white) can do for your plants. It will make your home greener than ever.
8 uses of vinegar for houseplants
1 – It serves as a herbicide, fungicide and insect repellent: the acidity of white vinegar is so powerful that it can eliminate insects, while apple cider vinegar is very effective in repelling the most common pests. A mixture of water and vinegar is prepared in a spray bottle and sprayed on the leaves of plants once a week.
2 – Clean plant leaves: the leaves of your plants accumulate dirt and dust over time. To remove them, simply make a mixture of one part vinegar (any vinegar) and two parts water, then use a microfiber or cotton cloth and wipe the cloth over the leaves.
3 – It regulates the pH of the soil: thanks to its acidity, vinegar helps regulate the pH of the soil. Simply mix a tablespoon of white vinegar with a liter of water and water the pot with this solution. Acid-loving plants that need an acidic substrate to survive (ficus, hydrangea or gardenia) will benefit from it quickly.
4 – Enriching the substrate: this also involves increasing the iron content of the soil or substrate. It should be done with small quantities of vinegar. It should be done in small quantities and only with plants that prefer acidic soils.
5 – Helps germination: vinegar also softens the outer shell of the seeds, a hard membrane that slows the germination process. Simply soak the seeds overnight in a bowl of water with 5 to 8 drops of white vinegar.
6 – Keep pets away: to prevent pets from damaging plants, vinegar can be a great ally, as dogs and cats don't like its smell. Simply soak an old rag in vinegar and place it near the pot to keep the animals away.
7 – Extends the life of cut flowers: vinegar helps inhibit the growth of bacteria and keeps flowers fresh longer. Add two tablespoons of white vinegar and one teaspoon of sugar to a bowl of water. Then use this solution to keep cut flowers fresh longer.
8 – Controls mold: vinegar has very beneficial properties for controlling mold that can be generated in some plants. Simply add two tablespoons of vinegar to a three liter can of water, shake and spray the area to be treated.
