Hubble’s successor is called the James Webb Telescope. NASA and international contractors are almost done with the enormous mirrors of the eight-million-dollar telescope, which will be launched into an ambitious space mission.
Once completed, the James Webb Telescope will be twenty times more powerful than the Hubble Space Telescope.
After completion, the James Webb Space Telescope will be the most powerful telescope mankind has ever made. Its mission will be to study the history of space, beginning with the first particle of light after the Big Bang and to find planets which can support life, similar to Earth.
After spending years in pre-production, the James Webb Telescope is taking important steps towards its final stages of development. The liftoff is scheduled for 2018. The James Webb Telescope will be carried to space by an Ariane Rocket, from a launching site in Europe. NASA has high hopes for this sophisticated machinery which is going to be launched in outer space.
The mirrors of the new telescope are a lot bigger than Hubble’s. The James Webb Telescope’s mirror is twenty-one feet in diameter, compared to just eight feet. The mirror is made from eighteen beryllium panels.
Because the James Webb Space Telescope can detect infrared images, it will peer deep into space, observing the early stages of the universe. John Durning, NASA’s project manager for the James Webb Telescope said that there are eight months left before the mission start.
The James Webb Telescope is a partnership project between NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency. It will go look at the very first stars to shine in space.
After the mission launch, the telescope is supposed to look back over 13.5 billion years to see the first stars and galaxies taking shape in the early version of the Universe.
The telescope has infrared sensors so it’s going to be able to observe objects outside naked eye observation range.
However, the telescope will have to travel to deep space, at least a million miles away from Earth, so it’s going to be hard to fix if anything goes wrong. This is going to be a bit of a gamble for NASA because a lot of money has been spent on crafting the telescope.
