Unshaven armpits are a symbol of female empowerment, as they promote the natural beauty of the woman’s body, as opposed to the socially accepted version of it.
As feminism is growing stronger and stronger nowadays, more and more symbols of female empowerment can be observed and more and more sexist stereotypes are being taken down.
Body hair is one of the biggest symbols of feminism at the moment. Since women’s obligation to shave their body hair off has become integrated into society mainly during the past century, along with the advancements observed in fashion, feminists feel that it should be up to the woman herself whether or not she wants to remove the hair on her body.
As skirts got shorter and shorter up to the mini skirt, and long sleeves turned into short sleeves and eventually into simple straps attached to tops, the fashion industry has also seen the need to eliminate the natural look of the female body and replace it with the unrealistic doll-like version of it, that is hairless.
Since then, women have been spending a tremendous amount of money every single month on laser therapy, waxing, shaving devices or specialized razor blades for sensitive skin, all with the purpose of fitting into society.
It seems that feminists want to put an end to this obligation that women feel to eliminate the hair from their body in order to look normal. By growing out their armpit hair, feminists want to point out that body hair is something normal and natural and not something disgusting.
And many women are taking up the challenge, all in the name of promoting the natural look of the human body. Celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and Madonna are proudly showing out their armpit hair publicly and at elegant events nonetheless.
Jemima Kirke, one of the stars of the hit series “Girls”, has made an unusual appearance at a prestigious fashion event that truly shocked the people present.
She wore a beautiful red floor length dress and a pair of gorgeous over-sized flower-shaped earrings. And as she raised her arms during the photo shoot, people were amazed to find out that her long blond hair was also present under her armpits.
Naturally, she received an extremely wide variety of mixed responses for her fashion choices, because it seems that it will take a while before people can get used to seeing women with hairy pits.
This is happening because we have gotten to the point where the presence of hair on a woman’s body elsewhere than her head and eyebrows is considered to be repulsive and actually offensive.
Most women would feel extremely ashamed if somehow they were to raise their arms in public and some trace of armpit hair would become visible. And in the end, if armpit hair is not something that they are comfortable with, it makes sense that they should shave it off.
The majority of women embrace the plastic doll hairless look as being the part of social norm and also part of their idea of the female body. They feel that armpit hair is simply not feminine and so they choose to shave it off.
But the simple idea that they might get to have that choice one day is actually a powerful symbol of female empowerment, whether they like their armpits hair-free or covered in a generous amount of hair.
