Shellfish might not the greatest meal nowadays. Due to the fact that the waters are getting warmer every day there are more toxic shellfish. Warmer waters are often linked to higher levels of domoic acid which is a toxic substance that is found in shellfish.
This substance is found in other marine animals and it can make people feel sick. The researchers discovered a connection between the temperatures of the seas and oceans and the toxic shellfish. They observed that the warmer the water the more toxic the marine animals.
In order to conduct this study, researcher gathered more than 20 years’ worth of data. The data was between 1991 and 2015. They compared the water condition from the Oregon coast with the levels of domoic from the same place. They added the ocean current and other factors that might influence the substance beside temperatures.
The findings showed that the levels of domoic acid were bigger in those years when the water was warmer. The researchers found that if there are 5 years of warmer oceans there are also 5 years with high levels of domoic acid. This domoic acid also means toxic shellfish.
This substance is produced by algae. After the algae are consumed by marine animals these animals store the toxin. If the waters are warmer, then the algae produce more domoic acid. This is why when the waters are warmer there is more toxic shellfish.
People who eat marine animals that have this substance can experience health problems including a neurological disorder known as domoic acid poisoning. This condition is also named amnesic shellfish poisoning. Some of the symptoms include seizures, stomach pains, numbing of the face, and memory loss. People can even die from this condition but the risk is low.
This substance was identified as dangerous in 1987 and its levels have been monitored along the U.S. since 1991. People usually develop this condition after they eat anchovies or toxic shellfish. These two tend to retain more substance than other marine animals. The toxicity can’t be lowered by freezing or cooking the marine animals. This is why you have to be careful when it comes to eating marine animals.
What is your opinion about this study? Did you know that warmer waters are linked to higher levels of domoic acid?
