In doing so, it basically broke the acquisition promise made to its users, which stated that they would not be affected by the change in ownership.
With the United States Federal Communications Commission having recently introduced new rules meant to protect the broadband user data from the Internet Service Provider’s usage or sharing, the EU measures remain to be seen.
The European data-protection authorities consider that in doing so, WhatsApp basically violates the user terms and conditions as it could use the private information in other means than those specified in the same contract.
The European data-protection authorities, which work in the name of 28 states, have sent a letter to the company in which they requested that the data shared between the company and its social media giant parent be stopped.
The practice would have to be halted until a proper legal protection could be assured for the user, otherwise, the app risks coming into conflict with the European data-protection rules and laws.
As WhatsApp has reportedly started working on the issue, it was not the only company to receive a letter and be investigated.
The EU also reportedly warned Yahoo in regards to its users’ data protection as a consequence of its user data breach.
Back in 2014, Yahoo suffered a massive data breach which is thought to have targeted about 500 million user accounts. As the problem was reportedly discovered this year and admitted somewhat later, it has been the cause of debates and concerns to all those concerned.
As the data breach comes is apparently connected to the European WP29 or Article 20 Working Party, the EU seeks to ensure its members’ protection.
For this reason, it has asked Yahoo to offer and communicate all relevant data in regards the data breach and how it may affect the users or its potential adverse outcomes.
As the company was also asked to cooperate in any future investigations and inquiries undertook by the EU data-protection authorities, the respective regulators are to meet and discuss both the Yahoo and WhatsApp situation sometimes in November.
