Why the Latest Dragon Ball Super Saga May Have Been the Franchise’s Biggest Mistake

Dragon Ball has been a significant part of many lives for over 40 years. While it has enjoyed its share of triumphs, it has also encountered plenty of missteps. Many fans believe that the latest saga of Dragon Ball Super marks a major error—not just due to the story itself, but also everything surrounding its release. So, let’s take it one step at a time.

The final saga that didn’t feel like one

After a successful run of chapters in the manga, featuring arcs like the Galactic Prisoner and Granola, Dragon Ball Super seemed to be at its peak. With characters like Vegeta mastering Ultra Ego and Goku refining his Ultra Instinct, excitement was running high. Then the decision came to adapt this content into the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. The result? More than a year spent on a story that many already knew, with extended scenes and new characters that did not even begin to rival those of earlier sagas.

Goku and Vegeta: Missing in Action

For those hoping to see Goku and Vegeta in action, it was a disappointment. They were nearly absent throughout the saga. Admittedly, this shift gave room for Gohan and Piccolo to take the spotlight, which might have been a refreshing change. Yet, for a concluding chapter, this felt like a significant oversight.

Furthermore, as fans craved answers about the implications of the Black Freeza appearance, they were met with an expanded version of a story previously experienced in cinemas. To top it all off, this ended up being the last piece of content released before the indefinite hiatus following the passing of the franchise’s creator.

A conclusion that did not feel like one

The superhero saga failed to provide a proper conclusion. We didn’t learn more about Freeza nor did we see what transpired with Universe 6 or if Goku would finally have a rematch with Jiren. Even more frustrating, this saga did not deliver any major twists or resolutions. Instead, it seemed to serve merely as filler, leaving many disheartened.

What is the issue with adapting a film? At face value, nothing at all. But when this adaptation takes over a year, while original storylines lie dormant and the creator passes away, it transforms into a concern.
