Wichita Teens Stole the Victim’s Car After Beating Him to Death
According to Marc Bennett, a Wichita District Attorney, 16-year-old Jalen Oliver, and 17-year-old Matthew Florez-Duran were recently sentenced to spend 15 years behind bars for the May house invasion and assault of Horace Johnson.
The perpetrators’ affidavit suggests that, back in May, Oliver and Florez-Duran broke into Johnson’s Wichita house with the intent of robbing the individual. Upon entering his home, the teenagers beat Johnson with a baseball bat and started rummaging around the house.
According to the authorities, before leaving the house, Florez-Duran and Oliver stole $20, a couple of weapons and some food. The teenagers fled from Johnson’s house using the victim’s car. The family’s relatives began getting worried after the authorities notified about finding Johnson’s car abandoned.
The Wichita man was found lying unconscious on the floor by one of his relative who went to check up on him. Johnson was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. One of the doctors said that, following the assault, Johnson was in a coma and that his chances of recovery are slim.
The suspects were later taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault. In February, a Wichita court found Jalen Oliver and Florez-Duran fit to stand trial as adults and sentenced them to 15 years in prison.
Unfortunately, Johnson shows no signs of improvement, the man being held in the hospital’s ICU on life support. The Wichita teens gave no motive as to why they’ve targeted Johnson’s house.
