Arnold Schwarzenegger's New Docuseries Dives Deep Into His Infamous Affair
Arnold Schwarzenegger's affair with former housekeeper Mildred Baena and the secret child they had together has been one of the most talked-about Hollywood scandals of this century. Now, the Terminator himself is opening up further about the affair in his upcoming Netflix docuseries, Arnold. In it, he reveals how his wife, Maria Shriver, questioned him about the child.
The Counseling Session Where the Truth Came Out
According to People, Schwarzenegger says that Shriver questioned him about Joseph, the child he had with Baena, in a counseling session. “Maria and I went to counseling once a week, and in one of the sessions, the counselor said, ‘I think today Maria wants to be very specific about something. She wants to know if you are the father of Joseph,'” Schwarzenegger recalls. “And I was like—I thought my heart stopped, and then I told the truth.”
Raising a Secret Child
Joseph Baena was born in 1997, so he was already a teenager when the scandal was exposed in 2011. Schwarzenegger admits that he did not always know that he was Joseph's father, but it became increasingly clear as the boy grew older. During his marriage to Shriver, Schwarzenegger provided for Baena and Joseph financially outside of Baena's work as the couple's housekeeper.
Co-Parenting and Rebuilding
Despite the scandal, Schwarzenegger and Shriver have continued to co-parent their four children, including Joseph. The final episode of Arnold, which comes out on Netflix on June 7, features the former governor talking about the aftermath of the affair, including how his son has grown up into an “extraordinary young man.” Schwarzenegger says that he's proud of how he and Shriver have continued to co-parent their children together. “There is nothing more important than to have a good partner by your side, and every step of the way Maria was that,” he explains.
